My approach roots in my wide experience as a product professional and consultant, examining the current end-to-end product development practices and addressing the obstacles that impede a smooth development.
1. Operating model and external environment challenges. First step is to identify the operating model in place and the external environment challenges impacting the company. The goal is to create awareness of the intrinsic challenges of the existing operating model, the external challenges the company is facing and assess the urgency to adopt other ways of developing product. You can read more on this step in this article I wrote.
2. Identify the appetite for transformation. Next is to understand whether the company is ready to transform. The objective is to decide whether we are simply optimising the existing operating model or there is enough company-wide support to trigger a transformation initiative.
The next steps focus on optimising the existing product development process:
3. Identify Challenges and Conduct Root Cause Analysis: The next step is to identify the specific challenges that hinder a smooth product development. This includes conducting thorough root cause analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying issues.
4. Defining Improvement Initiatives: Building upon the insights gained from the root cause analysis, I develop a set of improvement initiatives tailored to the organisation's specific needs. Each initiative is designed to remove or mitigate the obstacles hindering a smooth product development, addressing the root causes at their core.
5. Prioritisation of Initiatives: To ensure efficient implementation, I prioritise the improvement initiatives based on their impact, effort required, and any dependencies between them. This approach allows to start focusing efforts where they will yield the most significant results.
6. Detailed Initiatives Planning: For each improvement initiative, I create a detailed plan that outlines the steps and timelines, and includes the change management activities necessary to ensure adoption of the proposed improvements, leading to sustainable and long-term success.
7. Implementation of Initiatives: I work closely with existing teams and middle management to implement the improvement plan, monitoring the effectiveness of the improvements and making necessary adaptations based on feedback and changing circumstances.
